Why Your Microbiome is Key to Good Health

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 03/22/2017

In 2001 the term Microbiome was coined by a researcher named Joshua Lederberg. The term applies Microbiometo the 100 trillion microbial cells that each person carries on and in their body.

Whether you believe in evolution or Creation there is a symbiotic relationship between these microbial cells and human cells. A symbiotic relationship that either leads to good health or poor health.

In fact when you look in the mirror what you see is your human expression of your human cells. However, if you had the eyes of a powerful microscope you would see a world of microbial cells that outnumbered your human cells by a factor of 10.

Which has lead researchers in the area of the microbiome to use the phrase “We Are Only 10% Human!”

Why is this important?

Because the makeup of your micriobiome significantly, if not entirely, impacts your health and wellness. To the point where every major disease and illness today has a link back to your microbiome.

According to Dr. Steven Gundry, the most effective way to increase your energy is to increase polyphenols Increase Polyphenolsand eliminate lectins from your diet.  This means there are two parts to your energy equation:

Learn how to eliminate lectins

Learn how to increase polyphenols

In this post we’ll focus on how to increase polyphenols in your diet. Click here to read our post on how to eliminate lectins from your diet.

In this post we’ll focus on how to eliminate lectins from your diet. Our next post will focus on how to increase your polyphenol consumption.

What Are Lectins and What Do They Do?

Lectins are a group of proteins found in nearly all plants and animals. There are over 100 know types but 12 major lectins that typically cause health issues.

Plants usually have a higher quantity of lectins because they use them as a natural pesticide to protect themselves from being eating by insects. In fact one of the dangers of GMO foods is that lectins have been spliced into their genetic coding to make them more resistant to insects.

While this may help protect crops from insects and reduce the need for pesticides, they increase the risk for stealing your energy and causing you health problems.

Here’s how.

What the Heck is The Microbiome

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 09/22/2016

Over the next couple of months I’ll be doing a series of posts on The Microbiome. And the reason why is The Microbiomeemerging science is clearly identifying how significant the microbiome is to your overall health and the prevention of disease.

Here’s a quick definition of the microbiome as state by Katie Johnson:

“The human microbiome is a diverse array of microorganisms that populate the intestinal tract and can include bacteria, parasites, and yeasts.”

Now you might be thinking that this really doesn’t play a significant role in your health. Well consider this fact:

On a cellular level, bacteria outnumber us by a 10 to 1 ratio.

Fat Burning Exercises – Part Two

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 09/08/2016

In part one of this series on fat burning exercises we established that the amount of extra calories burned, Fat Burningby adding muscle to your body, is not as great as the internet and TV infomercials would have you believe.

The goal of this post is to help you see how the designed of your exercise program can significantly impact your caloric expenditure. And, what you eat and drink before and after you exercise also significantly impacts your fat burning ability.

Now the first place to start is in making a decision about the type of exercise program you’re going to follow.

Aerobic versus Anaerobic Exercise for Fat Burning!

Let’s make this as simple as possible. Fat burning exercises will either be

  • aerobic in design to strengthen the cardiovascular system

  • anaerobic in design to strengthen and build muscle tissue

  • or a combination of both.

Aerobic exercises use oxygen to create energy.  The primary fuel source is free fatty acids which yield large amounts of energy.

Anaerobic exercises create energy without the use of oxygen.  The primary fuel source is glycogen or blood glucose.

Fat Burning Exercises – Part One

Fat Burning ExercisesThere is a lot of information about fat burning exercises on the internet.  Unfortunately, most of the information is a bit misleading.  Typically, the information centers on whether you should be doing aerobic exercise to effectively burn your fat stores or whether you should be building muscle tissue to increase your metabolism to burn your extra fat!  The following quote from Adam Zickerman, author of Power of 10:  The Once-a-Week Slow Motion Fitness Revolution provides a good example of this:

“Three extra pounds of lean muscle burns about 10,000 extra calories a month.  (It) burns as many calories as running 25 miles a week, or doing 25 aerobic workouts a month without leaving your couch.”

This information, if accurate, would lead you to believe that all you have to do to lose body fat is put on an extra three pounds of lean muscle.  No need to pound the pavement or treadmill or go to your aerobic class.  Just workout with weights until you have gained those three pounds of muscle and you are set for life!

The Original Whole30 Program

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 08/08/2016

I had a potential new client call me the other day to talk about his health. I’m not going to go into detail Original Whole30except to say this:

At 5′ 6” he weighed 300 pounds and he made a comment on why God would allow us to suffer poor health.

As soon as his words came out of his mouth I thought of Caleb from the Old Testament. How at the age of 84 he was just as healthy as he was at age 40.

What was Caleb’s secret? His diet.

Which brings me to the “Original Whole30 Program.”

Four Metrics to Healthy Living

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 08/01/2016

Four Metrics to Healthy LivingThere are four metrics to healthy living. But before we look at these metrics you need to understand the growing trend that’s beginning to wreck havoc on our overall well being. It’s obesity and overweight issues that lead to metabolic syndrome health issues like diabetes and heart disease.

Currently, of the five billion adults living on the planet Earth, one in eight are clinically obese.

When you do the math that 625 million people.

And a fifth of these obese adults live in six high-income countries: United States, Britain, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Currently, the United States government estimates that more people die of too much food than too little.

The Acid Alkaline Balance – Part 2

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 07/06/2016

Acid Alkaline BalanceIn part 1 of The Acid Alkaline Balance we discussed the health crisis in America. To put this in perspective America is first in having access to clean water and sanitation facilities. We spend more money per person on health care and a greater percentage of our GDP that any other country.

Yet, we are 34th in infant death rate, 29th in maternal death rate, and 48th overall in life expectancy. Where we used to be #1 in life expectancy for women age 65 we are now 20th.

Many feel the source of the problem lies in our calorie consumption. Americans consume more calories per capita than any other nation and we show it by the prevalence of overweight and obesity health issues.

What Does This Have To Do With The Acid Alkaline Balance?

Everything! The vast majority of the American diet centers on foods that create an acidic environment in your body. This then allows other acid producing pathways to take hold having a negative impact on your health and wellness. The body’s acid alkaline balance moves to the acidic range as a result of the following three things:

The Acid Alkaline Balance – Part 1

Posted by Dan Hammer //
 07/01/2016

Acid AlkalineYour acid alkaline balance is a critical factor for both disease prevention and how well you age. This means understanding your body’s pH and its effect on your health is a critical component for a successful health strategy.

Some would even consider your body’s pH the single most important item to pay attention to for both optimal health and disease prevention.

Because of the scope of this issue, I have divided the acid alkaline balance into two parts. To set the stage for Part 1 we need to discuss the following topic.

Life Expectancy!

In the early 1900s the life expectancy in the United States was under 50 years of age. Over the last 100 years our life expectancy has increased to approximately 80 years of age, a 60% increase. Most experts in this area would attribute this increase to lower infant mortality, better diet, and improved hygiene. However, an interesting trend is occurring. With all the medicine and prescription drugs available to us today, especially here in the United States, we are continuing to move down on the life expectancy charts when compared to other countries. We are currently 48th in life expectancy.
